Miles to Kilometers Converter
Convert miles to kilometres with the exact factor, then apply the CRA, ATO, IRD or SARS rate that is published per kilometre — or check the distance against a per-mile rule before you claim it.
The exact factor
1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres exactly
The factor is exact by definition, not by measurement: the international mile is defined as 1,609.344 metres, so every figure below is that factor applied to the miles value with no rounding step in between.

100.00 mi = 160.93 km. Multiply by 1.609344 to go from miles to kilometres. Keep the converted figure with the trip record so the claim and the log agree.

The mi to km formula
kilometres = miles × 1.609344
Multiplication is the whole formula. Because the factor is exact, there is no rounding step and no tolerance to apply — 1 mile is 1.609344 km by definition, not by measurement.
The relationship was fixed when the international mile was defined as 1,609.344 metres, which is 5,280 feet of exactly 0.3048 metres each. The mile is longer than the kilometre, so a distance stated in miles always becomes a larger number when it is restated in kilometres.
Mental shortcuts, and how far off they are
Multiply by 1.6
About 0.6% low
Fast enough for planning a trip. On 100 miles it reads 160 km instead of 160.93 km.
Multiply by 8 and divide by 5
About 0.6% low — the same as ×1.6
The trick works because 1.609344 is close to the golden ratio, so consecutive Fibonacci numbers are a good ratio to use.
Multiply by 1.609344

Which countries need the kilometres
CRA, ATO, IRD and SARS publish their rates per kilometre, so a distance in miles has to be converted before those rules can be applied. IRS and HMRC rates are already per mile.
| Country | Rate | Threshold | Tax year |
|---|---|---|---|
| CanadaCRA · Automobile allowance benchmark; territories pay more. | 73 cents per kilometre, then 67 cents per kilometre | First 5,000 km · 73 cents per kilometre; After 5,000 km · 67 cents per kilometre | 2026 |
| AustraliaATO · All cars, work-related kilometres only. | 91 cents per kilometre | Cents per kilometre (up to 5,000 km) · 91 cents per kilometre | 2026-27 |
| New ZealandIRD · Petrol vehicle; diesel, hybrid and electric have their own rates. | 120 cents per kilometre, then 37 cents per kilometre | First 14,000 km · 120 cents per kilometre; After 14,000 km · 37 cents per kilometre | 2025-26 |
| South AfricaSARS · Simplified flat rate for business travel. | ZAR 4.95 per km | Simplified rate per km (up to 8,000 km) · ZAR 4.95 per km | 2026-27 |
| United StatesIRS · Business mileage rate for employees and self-employed drivers. | 76 cents per mile | Business rate · 76 cents per mile | 2026 (Jul 1-Dec 31) |
| United KingdomHMRC · Cars and vans, for the employee's own vehicle. | 55 pence per mile, then 25 pence per mile | First 10,000 miles · 55 pence per mile; Over 10,000 miles · 25 pence per mile | 2026-27 |
Rates are read from the same catalog the calculators use, so a rate here cannot drift from the rate you get when you calculate.
Turning the converted distance into a claim figure
Two worked examples at the tier boundaries that matter, priced with the current published rate and the tier split applied.
CRA · 2026
5,000 km of Canadian business driving
CA$3,650.00
5,000 km × 73 cents per kilometre = CA$3,650.00
The first CRA tier, which is the exact point where the Canadian rate drops. Read straight from the kilometre figure, so nothing further has to be converted.
ATO · 2026-27
5,000 km of Australian work travel
A$4,550.00
5,000 km × 91 cents per kilometre = A$4,550.00
The ATO cents per kilometre method caps at 5,000 work-related kilometres per car per year, so this is the largest claim the method supports.
The calculator applies the tier split for you, and takes the distance in either unit.
Large miles in kilometres
The larger figures that come up when a year of driving has to be restated in kilometres.
15.00 mi = 24.14 km
A 15-mile commute each way
Two legs a day, five days a week, comes to 150 miles a week — about 24.14 km for the week.
250.00 mi = 402.34 km
A 250-mile business trip
A single long drive, which is 402.34 km — the figure a kilometre-based policy needs.
10,000 mi = 16,093.44 km
The 10,000-mile UK AMAP threshold
HMRC pays the higher rate for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year. That threshold is 16,093.44 km.
15,000 mi = 24,140.16 km
15,000 miles
A common annual figure, which lands at 24,140.16 km.
How to round a converted distance
The conversion itself is exact, so the only decision is how many decimals to keep. Round the converted figure for display, but keep the unrounded number until the multiplication is done — rounding the distance first and then applying a rate compounds the error.
Two decimals is enough for a mileage log: the third decimal onwards is under 20 metres. On a long year of driving the difference is still small enough to ignore, but it is not zero.
Round to whole units only when the figure is context rather than a claim — a 2,000-mile drive is “about 3,219 km” in a summary, but the claim should carry the decimal.
Miles to Kilometres: common questions
How many kilometres are in a mile?
One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. The figure is exact rather than approximate because the international mile is defined as 1,609.344 metres. To convert any distance, multiply the miles by 1.609344.
How many miles are in a kilometre?
One kilometre is about 0.621371 miles, which is the reciprocal of 1.609344. To convert kilometres to miles, divide the kilometres by 1.609344 rather than multiplying by a rounded 0.62 — on 1,000 km the rounded factor is out by nearly 1.4 miles.
Is a mile longer than a kilometre?
Yes. A mile is 1.609344 kilometres, so a mile is about 61% longer than a kilometre. That is why a distance stated in miles always produces a larger number when it is restated in kilometres.
How do I convert miles to km quickly without a calculator?
Multiply by 1.6 for a fast estimate, or use the Fibonacci relationship: 5 miles is about 8 km, 8 miles is about 13 km, and 13 miles is about 21 km. Both shortcuts run about 0.6% low, which is fine for planning but not for a claim.
Why do Canada and Australia need kilometres when the US and UK use miles?
CRA allowance rates and the ATO cents per kilometre method are published per kilometre, while IRS standard mileage rates and HMRC AMAP rates are published per mile. Converting the distance first means you apply the published rate to the unit it was published in, instead of converting the rate itself.
Does a mileage log have to be in one unit?
Keep the unit your rate is published in. If you drove in a kilometre country under a per-mile rate, record the converted miles and note the original odometer reading so the two figures can be checked against each other.
Does the conversion change a road distance?
No. Converting changes the unit a distance is expressed in, not the route it describes. A 100-mile drive is 160.934 km of the same road. If you need the driving distance between two places rather than a unit conversion, measure the route first and convert the result.
How many kilometres is a marathon?
A marathon is 26 miles 385 yards, which the standard race distance rounds to 26.2188 miles — 42.20 km by this page's own conversion. The figure quoted in race rules is 42.195 km, or 42,195 metres.
Where these figures come from
States 1 mile = 1,609.344 metres, which is the 1.609344 km factor used throughout this page.
Gives the standard marathon distance as 26 miles 385 yards, or 42.195 km.
The conversion factor itself is arithmetic, not a published opinion: every figure on this page is computed from the mile definition above at render time.
Convert, measure, or price it
Measure a route if you need the driving distance rather than a unit change, then apply the rate for your country.
