Driving budget

Commute cost calculator

See what driving to work costs each month, including fuel, parking, tolls, and optional wear and maintenance. Compare two routes or office schedules using your own prices.

Your vehicle and working year

Use your own fuel price and economy. The starting values are an example.

Exclude weeks when you will not commute.

Optional. Add only costs not included in fuel, parking, or tolls.

Distance and fuel-unit changes convert your inputs. Currency changes the price labels. It does not convert the amounts.

Your monthly commute cost

The monthly average is the annual cost divided by 12.

Scenario A

$210.00

$2,520.00 per year

$10.50 per commuting day

Scenario B

$126.00

$1,512.00 per year

$10.50 per commuting day

Scenario B saves $84.00 per month · $1,008.00 per year.

Monthly commute cost breakdown
Monthly costAB
Fuel$70.00$42.00
Parking$100.00$60.00
Tolls$40.00$24.00
Wear & maintenance$0.00$0.00

7,200 mi and 240 commuting days per year in Scenario A.

Scenario A

Your current commute.

The calculator doubles this for the return trip.

Scenario B

Try fewer office days, a different route, or lower parking costs.

The calculator doubles this for the return trip.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose miles or kilometers, your fuel economy unit, and the currency for your prices.
  2. Enter fuel economy, fuel price, and the number of weeks you expect to commute this year.
  3. Use Scenario A for your current one-way trip and office days. Enter parking and the full return-trip toll cost per office day.
  4. Change Scenario B to compare another route, fewer office days, or different parking costs. The monthly difference updates as you edit.

Commute cost formulas

Annual commuting distance

One-way distance × 2 × office days/week × working weeks/year

Fuel cost with MPG

Annual miles ÷ miles/gallon × price/gallon

Fuel cost with L/100km

Annual kilometers × liters/100km ÷ 100 × price/liter

Monthly cost

(Annual fuel + parking + tolls + wear/maintenance) ÷ 12

Worked example: five office days versus three

This example uses 15 miles each way, 30 US MPG, $3.50 per US gallon, and 48 working weeks. Each office day costs $5 for parking and $2 for round-trip tolls. These are sample prices.

Worked example: five office days versus three

Five office days per week$210.00 / month$2,520.00 / year
Three office days per week$126.00 / month$1,512.00 / year

What the estimate includes

  • US and Imperial gallons are different units. Match the MPG selection to your vehicle's fuel-economy figure; the fuel-price label changes with it.
  • Monthly cost is an average across the full year. A month with more office days may cost more, while vacation months may cost less.
  • Wear and maintenance is your own per-mile or per-kilometer estimate. Leave it at zero for a fuel, parking, and tolls-only budget. Fixed loan payments and insurance are not included.
  • Both scenarios use the same vehicle economy, fuel price, and working year. Change the route or office schedule to compare commute costs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my monthly commute cost?

Multiply your one-way distance by two and by the number of commuting days per year. Calculate the fuel required, add parking, tolls, and any entered wear and maintenance cost, then divide the annual total by 12.

Does the calculator include the return trip?

Yes. Enter the one-way distance. The calculator doubles it for the journey home. Enter tolls as the full round-trip amount for each office day so they are not doubled again.

How do I compare a hybrid work schedule?

Set your current office days in Scenario A and a reduced number in Scenario B. Keep the route and prices the same to see how much fewer office days save.

Is this a fuel-only estimate?

You can make it fuel-only by entering zero for parking, tolls, and wear and maintenance. Add your own amounts to include those costs. Fixed loan payments and insurance are not part of this estimate.

Is my commute cost tax deductible?

For US tax purposes, travel between home and a regular workplace is generally personal commuting. This calculator estimates driving costs. It does not calculate a tax deduction. Check IRS Publication 463 for the rules and exceptions that apply to your situation.

Are the fuel price and exchange rates live?

No. Enter the price you expect to pay. Changing distance or fuel units converts the corresponding inputs, while changing currency only relabels amounts and does not apply an exchange rate.
