CRA rate switch

Provinces vs Territories Rate Switch

Clarify the province-versus-territory choice before estimating CRA automobile allowance totals.

Why the distinction matters

CRA allowance pages separate provinces from territories because the per-kilometre rates differ. In both cases the first 5,000 kilometres are paid at a higher rate, followed by a lower rate for additional distance.

- 2026 provinces: 73 cents/km for the first 5,000 km, then 67 cents/km

- 2026 territories: 77 cents/km for the first 5,000 km, then 71 cents/km

How to choose the right path

If your policy or planning workflow maps to provincial travel, use the province setting in the calculator. If the applicable rate is the northern allowance for territories, switch to the territory option before entering distance.
